What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine: What's the hype?

If you haven’t heard the news, functional medicine is #trending. If you are new to the concept of functional medicine, let’s get you up to speed.

Functional medicine is an integrative approach to health. This means we address the whole body, rather than just your diagnosis, or where your symptoms are presenting. Rather than going on a lifetime of medication, or using supplements to suppress your symptoms, functional medicine goes deeper to find the ‘root cause’ of disease. We address the underlying reason why there is an imbalance in the body in the first place.

How are we different?

Our protocols are specific to the individual patient. It’s not a “cookie-cutter” approach based on a label or diagnosis. For example, two people might have the same diagnosis, but they need to be handled very differently.

We take into account:

Why should you see a functional medicine practitioner?

Chronically ill people often have multiple systems in the body which are affected. They are all interconnected, no system works alone and the reason behind the compounding issue is not always easily identified.

This is what functional medicine doctors are trained to do.

Traditional medicine usually deals with suppressing symptoms, not the reason why you developed them. Patients often stay on medications or supplements, but have difficulty getting off them, or the problem keeps coming back as the underlying problem is not addressed.

We prefer to listen to your body’s signs and symptoms and address the underlying cause.

When you do the right thing by the body, it tells you very quickly, usually in weeks to months, NOT years.
