What is Functional Medicine?

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?

Functional medicine is an integrative whole system approach to health. It goes deeper to find the ‘root cause’ of disease, addressing the underlying reason why there is an imbalance or illness in the body.

WHY SHOULD I SEE A FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONER?

Chronically ill people often have multiple systems in the body which are affected. They are all interconnected, no system works alone and the reason behind the compounding issue is not always easily identified.

This is what functional medicine doctors are trained to do.

Traditional medicine usually deals with symptoms or presenting problems, not the reason why you developed them. Patients often stay on medications or supplements, but have difficulty getting off them or the problem keeps coming back, as the underlying problem is not addressed.

HOW ARE WE DIFFERENT?

Our protocols are specific to the individual. We take into account:

– your immune type
– your stress response
– a detailed medical history (including childhood illnesses, past infections, accidents, surgeries etc.)
– genetic variances
– environmental & lifestyle factors

We prefer to listen to your body’s signs and symptoms and address the underlying cause. When you do the right thing by the body, it tells you very quickly, usually in weeks to months, not years.
